I served with the 386th ESFS in Ali Al Salem Kuwait from November 2002 to the end of April 2003. All of personal assigned to Ali Al Salem Air Base did a great job during Operations Southern Watch, Enduring Freedom and Iraqi Freedom. I WAS THERE IN JUNE OF 05 AND I ALSO HAVE A FRIEND THERE RIGHT NOW. BUT IF HE IS ARMY I HAVE A BROTHER IN LAW WHO IS ON HIS WAY THERE AND I COULD HELP FIND OUT HOW TO GET A HOLD OF HIM OR FIND OUT WHAT THE E-MAIL IS FOR HIM. My husband is not a Marine, believe it or not he went voluntarily. He is a contract carpenter for KBR. We argued for months about it, we have six children. But he felt very strongly that this was his way of supporting our troops and providing for his family. I miss him terribly. He is 38 and unable to join the military, something he always regretted not doing.

I may have found a map that would give you a better perception of where Al Asad is in Iraq. The web page is http://www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/profile/iraq.pdf it is a pdf so you need adobe acrobat reader, the good thing is you can zoom in. if you zoom into fallujah and follow the euphrates north you see a little red airplane.. voila.. al asad.

I am actually living in Okinawa Japan, where we were stationed before my husband got sent to Al Asad. I was just interested in seeing if any of you would like to keep in touch on a regular basis. There are times that I would love to hear from other wives, girlfirends, moms, etc.. Being in Japan and my husband in Iraq, I long for some company from those who have the same interests as I... ie:"our husbands/fiances/sons, etc..." If you are interested in keeping in touch, please feel free to email me at dnahig@hotmail.com. Thanks for your time and may God Bless you and yours!

My husband has been at Al Asad for a little over a month now. He has sent me a site that his unit's CO is updating monthly. There are some pictures on this site. They are not anything that gives you alot of info, but it allows you to see what the area looks like (somewhat). Hope this gives you an idea of what the base is like for all our loved ones! http://www.i-mef.usmc.mil/msc/1fssg/KVN/deployed/cssb7.html Sorry the link is sooo long that it may not post correctly, but you can copy and paste it into your address line. Also! For those of you worried about passing too much info on line---my husband was told this is an "open site" meaning that anyone is free to access it, they control the info on there and will not be putting anything on there that shouldnt be there! :) Good luck to all and God Bless!

I'm an assistant KVC for the 1/23 USMC. I have to talk to people all the time who are worried about their kid and/or husband/wife/sister/brother/etc.. A few of things I tell them are, number one if you DON'T hear something about/from your Marine- they're okay. As the saying goes, no news is good news. Take that to heart. Two, I have heard from Marines there that there are times that the phones go out. Nothing bad happened, just the phones went out. They WILL come back on. Three, hundreds of people want to use the phone. Sometimes getting an open phone may be difficult. Lastly, these folks are BUSY and sometimes their business takes them away from their base and thus, the phones. They may be gone a few days, several days, have moved on to a new camp, whatever. They'll be back to the phones as soon as they can. My Marine was gone a month before I got to talk with him (last week). HANG IN THERE!

It is hard to tell from the posts on this website what time frame is being discussed regarding communications. I have not heard from my loved one since 10-17-04 when he quickly e-mailed -- to tell me his private contracting company, which works on the base, was going into electronic lockdown. So my question would be does anyone have any information regarding communications during this time frame? And please date your posting as a reference point for all of us who read them. My brother is with the Seabees from Ebensburg, PA. He is stationed at Al Asad Air field. He is to come home in March. Would like to know if anyone received any photo's or know of any sites that show this air field and of the NMCB-23 Unit. He called my mom this morning and said that communications will probably shut down the closer it gets to the elections.

This site has been a great comfort to me with my private thoughts especially when I feel like I do right now which is anxious. I find myself reading these in the middle of the night when I can't sleep. It's as if you hear my conscience. I have asked the Lord to keep safe all our loved ones. I thank all of you for keeping me sane when only you too can know how I feel. Thank you so much.

My daughter transited through your base on her way to Tikrit from a 15 day R&R at home in Wisconsin. This was on either the 12th or 13th of July. She had to catch a C130 to Balad and was ordered to place all belongings on a pallet. That is the last she saw of her black backpack. Her Army issue duffel turned up a few days later as did a couple of text books she had in the backpack. I realize this is a total shot in the dark but maybe the right person will read this and miracles do happen.. The backpack contained a new Canon A75 digital camera and a new Sony disc player,(net Md MZN420D, Orange, silver, white and grey), also a personal diary of her first 6 months in Iraq as well as irreplacable pictures in the cameras memory card. If there is an unclaimed baggage section on your base please forward them this info, or perhaps someone of you reading this works with the R&R flights and the C130's. If by some chance these items are located, please forward them to the 67th CSH APO AE 09392 in care of Samantha

I'm deploying there within a few weeks. Any advice what to bring? Should I bring a laptop computer, air mattress vs foam mattress, type of civilian clothing not permissable, etc.. I'd appreciate any feedback. Oh, in the Air force, I know there are some Army folks there too so it would probably best to get responses from the Air Force folks but any sound advice would be welcomed. I'm going to be there for the next four months. Thanx.

Hi there, Been to Ali three times and will be going back here during the second week of September (YUK!). Okay, since you have never been there one of the things that happens is, come the end of September and all the way throught to January or so it does get kind of chilly in the evenings. That being said it also gets warm during the day. Not as bas as June, July and August but still gets hot. They are also trying to establish the clothing reg there and have been trying to get people to either wear their PT gear when not at work and uniforms (of course) the rest of the time. They haven't pushed it to hard there yet but I would be prepeared for that to happen soon. Once the AF figures out what exactly PT gear is for us. If they haven't figured out that by the time we get there, then just shorts and a decent t-shirt will suffice. I would bring a laptop, camera, DVD player. They used to (not sure if they do it anymore) set up peoples laptops for them to use on the lan. I guess it just depends on your job anymore. I wouldn't pack a bunch of toiletries and stuff like that since they have a fairly well stocked BX and if there is anything you really need, the people that run the BX make daily runs to Camp Doha (the BIG BX in the sky) to pick up things. The REC center has moives you can check out but they are pretty old though. Lots of VHS tapes and about half of that DVD's. Bring a swim suit as the pool is open until Ocotober and some days there just isn't anything else to do there. You will need some nice clothes if you plan on going on a trip into Kuwait city. You see a lot of traditional garb in the city and a lot of western type clothing as well. It is nice to get away from the prison camp once in a while. They do have a pretty decent gym with some good equipment and the gym staff are pretty decent. If you are coming over on the rotator remember that you have to lug all that stuff that you bring so remember that. IF you are coming the better way (anythig other then the rotator) you'll be okay. Email me at: m-duffy@comcast.net Let me know when you'll be there. Mike

Air Force Mom
My son has been at Ali al selam for almost 2 months now. Don't worry if you don't hear from him for over a week, that's not unusual. Some times the phone lines go down in the dorms and sometimes they just don't have anything new to tell. My son has a hotmail address and an email address at work. He works in an office some of the time. But they do have places for them to check their emails if he doesn't have his own computer. My son tells me they are not allowed to go off base, so their world gets pretty small. He says sometimes it's like the move "Ground Hog Day"! Send letters as often as you can. Even though they can call and email, getting mail from home is pretty important too. Alway try to stay positive. It doesn't help them if they have to worry about how you are doing. My son was never a reader just for pleasure, now he has taken up reading novels in his time off. If you like to read and know any good books, you might want to send him some. Try to stay busy, you'll get through it and he will be back in your arms before you know it. Be strong and hang in there.

We live in a small town in the midwest and there are not too many ohter people around here that understand what it feels like to have a child so far away that could possibly be in harms way. In some way, it is a comfort to read coments from other parents that have the same feelings. When our son was a little boy, I would often wonder, how do mothers send their son's off to war? Now I know the answer. With much pride! I too know how well trained and committed these brave people are, which is a comfort. God be with you all.

HELLO ALL I AM A MARINE WHO WAS STAIONED AT AL ASAD FOR 7 MONTHS AS A PART OF THE BASES SECURITY BATTALION. AS FAR AS THE ATTACKS GO IT IS ALOT MORE LAID BACK A BASE THAN ANYWHERE ELSE IN IRAQ BUT IT IS ALSO ON OF THE MOST IMPORTANT BASES IN ALL OF IRAQ. TO GET PICTURES THE BEST THING TO DO IS TO DO A YAHOO OR GOOGLE SEARCH OF AL ANBAR PROVINCE WHICH IS WHERE AL ASAD IS LOCATED

KBR Village on AL ASAD Air Base, where civilian contractors live, was quite small by the time I left in May 05. It was growing fairly quick, but, as with any other part of the base, they can only grow as fast as the supplies come in. Civilian and military on Al Asad, in my time there, did alot of bartering to enable each group to get what they needed. Those on the ground there did the best they could with what was at hand, which in my eyes is a credit to them all. It is a good base to be on, without alot of the politics that are so prevalent on other posts, and being as remote as it is, attacks are seldom effective since they can't get close enough for anything more than random shots and rocket volleys. All in all, this is one of the better places to be in Iraq

Always allow yourself time and don't believe anything that you hear unless it comes from your spouse. Life is as simple or as hard as you make it. Hello, My dad is their and he usually gets the bags that you can suck the air out of with a vaccum. They work great for occasions like this one. You should bring anything that is uplifting and fun. Pictures of people close to you. MOVIES... Don't Bring or have someone send you beef jerky it's against the rules now. But if you like chips and salsa that's fine. From what my dad has told me the food is good well better than when the kuwaties made it. Now some active duty people run it... Oh also get some flip flops or some plastic sandal that is not going to stink after it gets wet for the showers... Don't forget your toothbrush....:) Love, Julie Thanks for serving!

Your own pillow, clip light for your bunk, shower shoes, small rug, mini flashlight, lots of PT clothes, backpack. It is cold there right now so pack warm clothes. I made the mistake of only taking one pair of pants. Take something to haul your laundry to and from the laundry facility. Sometimes it's a little bit of a walk from the tents. You are provided with linen when you get there. Have fun and be safe!

Isn't there a way you can contact your CO or someone within your unit/ platoon that would be better in getting you the info you need?! I know before hubby deployed he was put in contact with others that were already in country in his same MOS and briefed on what to expect, etc.

It seems to take about 3 weeks to get mail from the states. Sometimes it depends on what you send. If it is a simple letter then it should be there by now. There is nothing to worry about at ali al salem except wether the barber is going to mess up your haircut or not. There is an army compound that has all access internet. Mcdonalds, subway, pizza hut and many other things to do out there. There is a swimming pool, rec center movie theater. its not so bad out there i would gladly go again, but only during the winter months. Summer sucks.

I assume that you mean Sadam and his crowd that have terrorized and occupied the country for 30 yeqars. The allies have liberated sixty million people and the winds of liberty and freedom are starting to blow. Sadam will hang and will face Jesus in heaven and have a lot of explaining to do.

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has an idea of things you cannot bring with you to the AB. My husband is deploying there soon and was wondering if there is anything he shouldn't bring. Thank you in advance for your help. Lilly

Hi all, I transited through Ali Al Salem from Baghdad at end of Jan 2005 from Baghdad on way to Ramstein/Aviano/Baltimore. I placed a green duffel and a blue/black North Face backpack on a pallet on the acft I was on, both marked w/ my name/tags. They sent me on a bus to the holding camp one way and the pallet w/ my bags the other way. That whole day while waiting for the freedom flight, I called around and filed a claim w/ the USAF LNO. No luck then. It's a long shot, but I would REALLY, REALLY appreciate it if someone could give me some numbers/POC to track my bags down or at least file a claim. The bags are expendible, but they contain some Iraqi presents given to me by my Iraqi colleauges. THANK YOU!

I just wanted to let you know that my boyfriend was at the same base your husband is going to from August 2004-Feb 2005. He is also going back Jan 2006. The base is known to be the safest and I was able to talk to him fairly often by phone and yahoo messanger. I guess they have yahoo messanger on the computers over there rather than aol. So if you don't have acounts you should get them. Hope this helps and comment back if there is anything else.

Allegedly, AASAB is the hardest target in the AOR. It's in the middle of NOWHERE and patrolled out the ying yang by SF and Kuwaitis. He'll be so safe that he'll be bored....promise. There wasn't any cultural travel there either during my rotation...whichmade 120 days go very slowly. I did get to go to Arifjan and the closed base Al Jabr. I volunteered for convoy escort protection just so I could get away from THE ROCK.

Yes. I was there from Dec 05 to Apr 05 and they do have a BX. Still, the base is overwhelmed with folks- those who are TDY there and the army, marines and others who rotate in and out. The gym was totally inadequate for the amount of folks stationed there.

My brother was medivaced from Bagram AFB at approx. 0300 hr to go to Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany, but never made it there. I've called the hospital in Germany, they said he may have been bumped in Ali al Salem. He is a civilian working at Bagram, (is retired AF.) We have not gotten any info from the company he works for, due to the fact that it is a weekend. That's their lame excuse. My family, and especially his wife, are desperate to find him. If anyone has any info on how to contact the medical facilities on base, I would be very grateful. Please responde back ASAP. Patient's name is R. K. Rogan Thank you

My girlfriend is in Al Asad and commo has been sporatic and this is my first experience with deployment. She basically said she would try to call at least once a week but phone calls for her are difficult to accomplish. I appreciate others on this site explaining that communication can be not exactly what we expect. I will still write as much as I can and send as much goodies it's really appreciated. Our loved ones are going thru more than we sometimes know.
