One of my sons is in the U. S. Army and is stationed in Ar Ramadi, or Err Ramada. He tells me that the Iraqis recently celebrated a soccer win by shooting off tracers into the air. He says that you could almost read by the light of the bullets. Fortunately, he reports that none of them were shot into the compound. The joys of Ar Ramadi.

My soldier is in Ar Ramadi at Camp Junction City. He is in C/4-3 ADA with the 1st Brigade. It has been several months since I last heard from him. I just continue to send letters and care packages. Does anyone know what the mail situation is like for that division/camp and phone access? Any info about this unit would be greatly appreciated.

Would like to send my deepest respect to the family of a soldier i served with. He was a fun guy who could always make you smile and never complained. He has just been pinned his E-5. And was home for 15 days of R and R right before christmas he died on christams eve. Many will never know him and all he had brought to people he met. My stepfather is in Camp Junction city ,Iraq. He is a medic with the 101st Fsb attached to the 82nd airborne. The mail situation is pretty good!, Just don't expect to get a response if your loved one is really busy. My family had a hard time when our soldier didn't respond to mail for about a month, it turned out that his mail was going to the wrong battalion for some reason. Just hang in there and keep your faith in our troops, and our cause! By the way.... anyone with photos of any of the 101st fsb soldiers at camp junction, I am creating videos to send to our troops over there in that unit... i would love any photo submissions to bjlynn2003@yahoo.com .... I received word from another family support member that the 350th MPAD was divided today and given four hours to move from ar Ramadi. They have no body armor and are a support unit only -- journalistic, public affairs functions. The incidences surrounding the move is undertermined. Does anyone have any idea why a non-combat unit without armored resources would be taken off of red alert and moved outside the ar Ramadi compound? Does anyone know of the 82nd Airborne's commander's attitude toward non-airborne support staff? Any info is appreciated as we try to keep rack of our sons and daughters.

I am a reservist and we deliver fuel all over ar-ramadi and the 82nd's attitude is gracious and thankful, without our equipment they would have alot less fuel and they really appreciate it. Sometimes people misconstrue not having the ceramic plates in the body army, we all have flak vests, just not the plates. Protection level without the plates is good enough for shrapnel and a 9mm round from at least 300m. They are working on getting plates out this way and I hope the plan works

Hey Robert, i am Cpl Damon A. Boxley with the 1/124 inf, of the FlARNG. Ramadi sucks ass, first off, the people aren't too bad, they pretty much give you wide berth. The weather right now is getting colder, so remeber your snivel gear. The chow is hit or miss, KBR (kellog,brown and root) is contracted to make chow at consolidated DFACs, there is one at Champion Base(aka North palace) and one is currently under construction at Juction City, there is a PX on each one of the 3 camps in Ramadi, so you can get the basics if you need it. toiletries don't worry about that crap, there is so much of that floating around it ain't funny. Smokes and dip is a little harder to get, at least stateside tobacco products, most of the stuff you get on the local economy is swiss grown. if you need to know anything else feel free to drop me a line at damon.a.boxley@us.army.mil, currently i am stateside on leave so i should be able to get back to you pretty quickly Damon A. Hey Robert, I am Spc Salas, with the 304th Civil Affairs. Like the CPL said it is getting colder, you are not allow to wear civilians, bring your PT gear. Bring gloves, and coldweather gear. Most people sleep in beds, Bunk beds. Your personal space is limited. Bring your credit card. Get the address of your loves ones so you can keep in touch with them. Make care packages ready, so your love ones could send them out to you. The PX in Junction City is already open. It is big. They do lock in extion cords. That is something you may want to buy before or putting it in a care package and telling your love one to send it to you. I think that the food is decent. The shower are mostly cold. I currently reside in Champion Base, with the 82 Airborne division. I go into the town of Ramadi everyday. make sure that you have great boots. I ordered my desert boots from Altima.com. I have a face mask to cover me and keep me warm. The laundry system is do it your self. Wash and hang it up. Bring surge protectors. Get the 110 and 220. You could get the 220 at Camp Arifjan. Camp Arifjan is in Kuwait that is most likely where you are going to stay before moving up to Ramadi. Don't forget your polly pros. If you have a laptop bring it. It is the est thing that I have. I wacth DVD before I go to sleep and I keep all my files and letter to my love ones. I have a Digital Camera. I have over 5000 pictures. I have been to Kuwait, Camp Bucca Iraq, Baghdad, and Ar Ramadi. I can't think of anything else right now but My email is salasj@mville.edu if you have any sudden question I will be here. I haven't heard from my loved one in over two months. Probably involved in missions. Is it common to not have any contact with a soldier for a long time (mail or phone)? My soldier is stationed in Ramadi with the 1st Bde, 1st infantry (attached to the 82nd). Also, does anyone know if the soldiers are receiving their mail? I miss him and am really worried about him.

My son is with with the 1st Marine Div. 2/4 wpns co. They are on a penisula between the Euphrates and a canal. Not a big unit. I'd like to know about e-mail oppurnities and would love to find a map of Ramadi. He's happy he has a shower and food. The cot in a tent is a bonus! He was over for the actual war and didn't get enough food and not many showers. I'd give my address and phone #, but the Iraqi fools are on the internet too. My advive to the troops is: if it mooves shoot it. If it moves again, shoot until it it is still. Not PC, but I am a Viet vet. These people don't appreciate freedom.

An Operational Security (OPSEC) Primer By the U.S. Department of Energy "Even minutiae should have a place in our collection, for things of a seemingly trifling nature, when enjoined with others of a more serious cast, may lead to valuable conclusion." — George Washington, known OPSEC practitioner What is Operational Security (OPSEC)? The Intelligence Puzzle Intelligence collection and analysis is very much like assembling a picture puzzle. Intelligence collectors are fully aware of the importance of obtaining small bits of information (or "pieces" of a puzzle) from many sources and assembling them to form the overall picture. Intelligence collectors use numerous methods and sources to develop pieces of the intelligence puzzle . . .their collection methods range from sophisticated surveillance using highly technical electronic methods to simple visual observation of activities (these activities are referred to as "indicators"). Information may be collected by monitoring radio and telephone conversations, analyzing telephone directories, financial or purchasing documents, position or "job" announcements, travel documents, blueprints or drawings, distribution lists, shipping and receiving documents, even personal information or items found in the unclassified trash. The Premise of OPSEC The premise of OPSEC is that the accumulation of one or more elements of sensitive/unclassified information or data could damage national security by revealing classified information. The Goal of OPSEC The goal of OPSEC, as a "countermeasures" program, is to deny an adversary pieces of the intelligence puzzle. ORIGIN OF OPSEC There is nothing new about the principles underlying OPSEC. In fact, we can trace OPSEC practices back to the colonial days and the Revolutionary War. George Washington, our first president, was a known OPSEC practitioner. General Washington was quoted as saying, "Even minutiae should have a place in our collection, for things of a seemingly trifling nature, when enjoined with others of a more serious cast, may lead to valuable conclusion." However, OPSEC, as a methodology, originated during the Vietnam conflict when a small group of individuals were assigned the mission of finding out how the enemy was obtaining advance information on certain combat operations in Southeast Asia. This team was established by the Commander-in-Chief, Pacific, and given the code name "PURPLE DRAGON." It became apparent to the team that although traditional security and intelligence countermeasures programs existed, reliance solely upon them was insufficient to deny critical information to the enemy--especially information and indicators relating to intentions and capabilities. The group conceived and developed the methodology of analyzing U.S. operations from an adversarial viewpoint to find out how the information was obtained. The team then recommended corrective actions to local commanders. They were successful in what they did, and to name what they had done, they coined the term "operations security." OPSEC and Government Activities Over the years it became increasingly apparent that OPSEC had uses in virtually every government program that needed to protect information to ensure program effectiveness. OPSEC professionals modified and improved techniques based on experience gained with many different organizations and in areas far afield from military combat operations. Today, OPSEC is as equally applicable to an administrative or research and development activity as it is to a combat operation. If OPSEC is not integrated into sensitive and classified activities, chances are that our adversaries will acquire significant information about our capabilities and limitations. It probably would have been difficult for the "Purple Dragon" team to foresee that, 20 years later, the methodology they developed would become a national program. OPSEC AT HOME You have probably been practicing OPSEC in your personal life without knowing it! When you are getting ready to go on a trip have you ever: Stopped the delivery of the newspaper so that they would not pile up outside and send a signal that you are not home? Asked your neighbor to pick up your mail so the mailbox would not fill up, also indicating that you are away? Connected your porch lights and inside lights to a timer so they would go on at preset times to make it look like someone is home? Left a vehicle parked in the driveway? Connected a radio to a timer so that it comes on at various times to make it sound like that someone is inside? Well, guess what you did? You practiced OPSEC! The critical information here is obvious - we do not want anyone to know the house is unoccupied. None of the actions (countermeasures) listed above directly conceal the fact that your residence is unoccupied. A newspaper on the lawn or driveway does not necessarily mean no one is at home. Newspapers in the yard or driveway are only an indicator to the adversary. That indicator, combined with other indicators, (no internal lights at night, mail stuffed in the mailbox, etc.) will provide the adversary with the information needed to reach a conclusion with an acceptable level of confidence. In this case, the more indicators that the adversary is able to observe, the greater the level of confidence in his/her conclusion. When you eliminate these indicators, you have a much better chance of ensuring that your home is not burglarized while you are away. The same holds true at your place of work. We must protect our critical information and eliminate indicators available to the adversary. THE FIVE-STEP OPSEC PROCESS NSDD 298 formalized OPSEC and described it as a five-step process: Identification of the critical information to be protected Analysis of the threats Analysis of the vulnerabilities Assessment of the risks Application of the countermeasures Identification of Critical Information Basic to the OPSEC process is determining what information, if available to one or more adversaries, would harm an organization's ability to effectively carry out the operation or activity. This critical information constitutes the "core secrets" of the organization, i.e., the few nuggets of information that are central to the organization's mission or the specific activity. Critical information usually is, or should be, classified or least protected as sensitive unclassified information. Analysis of Threats Knowing who the adversaries are and what information they require to meet their objectives is essential in determining what information is truly critical to an organization's mission effectiveness. In any given situation, there is likely to be more than one adversary and each may be interested in different types of information. The adversary's ability to collect, process, analyze, and use information, i.e., the threat, must also be determined. Analysis of the Vulnerabilities Determining the organization's vulnerabilities involves systems analysis of how the operation or activity is actually conducted by the organization. The organization and the activity must be viewed as the adversaries will view it, thereby providing the basis for understanding how the organization really operates and what are the true, rather than the hypothetical, vulnerabilities. Assessment of Risks Vulnerabilities and specific threats must be matched. Where the vulnerabilities are great and the adversary threat is evident, the risk of adversary exploitation is expected. Therefore, a high priority for protection needs to be assigned and corrective action taken. Where the vulnerability is slight and the adversary has a marginal collection capability, the priority should be low. Application of the Countermeasures Countermeasures need to be developed that eliminate the vulnerabilities, threats, or utility of the information to the adversaries. The possible countermeasures should include alternatives that may vary in effectiveness, feasibility, and cost. Countermeasures may include anything that is likely to work in a particular situation. The decision of whether to implement countermeasures must be based on cost/benefit analysis and an evaluation of the overall program objectives. OPSEC Laws The First Law of OPSEC If you don't know the threat, how do you know what to protect? Although specific threats may vary from site to site or program to program. Employees must be aware of the actual and postulated threats. In any given situation, there is likely to be more than one adversary, although each may be interested in different information. The Second Law of OPSEC If you don't know what to protect, how do you know you are protecting it? The "what" is the critical and sensitive, or target, information that adversaries require to meet their objectives. The Third Law of OPSEC If you are not protecting it (the critical and sensitive information), the adversary wins! OPSEC vulnerability assessments, (referred to as "OPSEC assessments" - OA's - or sometimes as "Surveys") are conducted to determine whether or not critical information is vulnerable to exploitation. An OA is a critical analysis of "what we do" and "how we do it" from the perspective of an adversary. Internal procedures and information sources are also reviewed to determine whether there is an inadvertent release of sensitive information

My brother is stationed in Ramadi and is a seargent. His release date was set for April when his 4 year comittment was up and he was scheduled ot leave Iraq on Dec. 29th. We have just received word that he will be stationed for another year in Iraq and that his contract has been extended. Hang in there Ian! We all miss you so much and it kills me to know that you are so far away in such horrible circumstance sand there's absolutely nothing we can do to help you but keep sending magazines, candy, and other trivial items. Pleas know that we are all thinking of you constantly and Dad is constantly on the computer looking up information and trying to do everything he can to get you home ASAP. My nephew is w/ 82nd AB near Fallujah... is Camp Volturno closed to Ar Ramadi? My neighbor will be leaving for Ar Ramadi on the 4th day of Christmas for gov't contract work through Brown/Root (a Halliburton company). Well, at least I think he is there. The last I heard from my husband was on Sunday a week ago when he called from Kuwait. You know they aren't supposed to reveal their where-a-bouts or headings, but this site and the names of the Camps are dead give aways. I hope to hear from him soon. My son is with the 82nd Airborne Unit & he has been there for 7 months now. All I can say is just keep praying for all the men & women there to return home safely. He runs escorts & has been attacked 5 times but only hit once. He seen some of his buddys killed & I think that has done him more harm then when he was hurt. I really don't think nowhere over there is safe anymore. I will keep you & your husband in my prayers. I'm hoping my son will finally return home next month. He was stationed in Afganistan for 6 months last year. He has been away from home for the past 2 yrs during his 3 yr old nieces birthdays, Thanksgivings, & Christmass. He has missed out on so much of his families celebrations. We still haven't had Christmas this year - We're waiting for him to come home - don't care if it's Christmas in July! I am PROUD of each & every one of the soldiers that go over there & put their life on the line so we can have a good life here on the homeland. Thank your husband for me please.

I don't want to upset anyone, but doesn't it worry you that the details you're posting here might get into the wrong hands somehow? I'm a USMC spouse and we get told over and over and over again not to reveal specifics about our husbands or their activities... doesn't it worry you that you're making this base a bigger target by sharing too much information on it?

Hi, my husband left from Camp Pendleton on Valentine's Day. He's a Reservist(gone Active) working with 1stMarDiv. I just got my first letter from him today. It was mailed on the 17th. He has access to email because of his job...I get a sentence or two every day or so. I feel blessed. He says that there are no phones around...he thought that there were, but just found out that there probably are not. I pray for our guys over there every day. Have you heard from yours?

HI Angela, He called at 7:30 pm his time and there was no line. The phone cards are SOOO cheap...so he spent $50 and got a 7 hour phone card... apparently they received their duties yesterday, so I haven't heard from him yet today. Hi Barb, My man said he got his phone card somewhere in the camp...I am not sure where he purchased it from though...when I find out I Will gladly post it to the site. Also, AT&T has special military rate phone cards for 5cents a minute and then they just bill you. You may want to look into that as well. That way you don't have to deal with the annoyance of the card running out on you in mid conversation, that happened to us once. Good Luck!

Hello all. My sig. other is in the 2/4 weapons co. I need to put together a package to send to him but I am not sure what I should be including as it is our first time through this (my first time). I am out of the USA right now in Canada and his letters take about 2 weeks from the time he writes them to get to me so I always feel like I am about two weeks behind on his life (whatever life he has over there) I have had no phone calls. Where did you get a 7 hr phone card for ? Is it legit or do they charge you 50 cents + for connect and a arm and a leg each min so it screws your "7 hrs" I hate when phone card comp do that. Hi Laney, MY name is Michelle. My boyfriend is in the 1stMAR Div and was sent the the same place your son is (seemingly). I have heard from his twice. He said that it is quite dangerous, but that the morale among the Marines is high. The journey from Kuwait to ArRamadi was quite dangerous, but everyone made it to the camp safely. Anything I hear about the conditions I will be glad to pass on to everyone here. He did say that they can't brush their teeth with the water because it has fesces in it....but that they have no choice but to shower in it. That aspect of the conditions are bad, but he said there are phones, and that there is a web cafe equiped with web cams (my boyfriend and I were able to utilize one the other night). My son has been there with the army since Sept. 2003 He keeps telling me he's "okay". They have came along way since he got there.They have an internet cafe set up now for E-mail.He was working twelve hour days seven days a week but he said that helped to pass the time quicker(not for me)It's been a long six months.

My brother has been over there since last September, as well. What company is your son in? Was he stationed out of Ft. Riley? My brother says the same thing every time we hear from him. He always says he's o.k. and to not worry about him. It's definitely easier said than done. It's nice to think that next week will mark the 1/2 way point of his tour over there! September can not get here fast enough! I will keep your son in my prayers....right along with the all the other brave soldiers over there!

My son is in the 1/16th from Ft. Riley also, he's currently attached to A Co 1/34 armor in Camp Manhattan. His Brother is a Marine stationed at 29 Palms. My Army son doesn't talk much about his location or how things are there. Just says he's hangin in there, that some days are better than others. Thats about as generic as one can get I think...

Hi. My son was also at Ar Ramadi with the 82nd Airborne. He left there 10 days ago after the Marines came in and is now south of Bagdad waiting to "convoy" it down to Kuwait. As I understand, they should be landing at Fort Bragg on the 8th or 9th if all goes to plan. I am planning on driving from NJ to be there. I always felt that within the walls of the palace at Ramadi he was somewhat safe. This next week as they travel at night will be different. I pray that all our soldiers come home safe and whole. My son has been there since sept as well- your comments sound familiar - I keep wondering why they say they want things to DO if they are working 10-15 a day, 7 days a week. My son reports that he had not had a day off of that schedule since Sept until about a week and a half/two weeks ago - and I think MY job is stressful ! If you talk to your son, ask him if he knows "BBs" and can follow the road to "Rte Red Sox" in Ramadi!

My son just called from ar Ramadi - he said things are pretty intense. My first package took 20 days to get to him. He was excited to get the snacks and said - send more. He was glad to get kleenex and toilet paper. But he sounded good and it was great to hear his voice. He also asked for AT&T phone cards. My son is in Ar Ramadi. He has been there since September. He said that it takes about a month to get my letters. It takes 1 1/2-3 months to get packages. He has access to a store on base where he is able to buy most things he needs. He really appreciates letters and pictures of home and family. I am now sending letters separate from my packages because of the difference in delivery time. I also sent several magazine subscriptions to him which he receives monthly (though late). Letters and pictures is always his answer when I ask what I could send. May God be with you and grant you peace and strength. I pray for our soldiers continually.

I just found this site today. What a great way to connect with people. My boyfriend is xxxxxxxxx also from 3/11 HQ. Motor T operater. They said they were split so there is Lema and HQ bttrys now. Not sure which he's in. I've talked to him a few times and he said he's fine. The last was I think MAr. 15th or 16th. An email on the 18th and he said he's sending letters soon. He said he's getting 3 square meals a day. Said there was an entertainment room. He asks for more pics from home and letters. I've sent him several already. He says he doesn't have much time to read them, but he's trying to keep up with it. He's gotten one package already. A small one, it took maybe two weeks. My roommate's boyfriend is also in the same Bttry. She gets calls or emails almost daily. Last she heard from him was two or three days ago. Dawn My grandson has asked for the following: Baby wipes, foot powder, chap stick, fly tapes, bug repellant (we got deet spray from Wal-Mart), cd player & cd's, socks, adaptor plugs to convert electricity (hope I'm explaining this right), powdered gatorade, lots of goodies - brownies, cookies, fruit cups. They have a micro wave so I sent those cup of noodles, dinty moore stews, popcorn, anything they don't have to add ingredients to. We also sent him a portable DVD player and movies. He said it is like Christmas when they get packages. Hope this helps. Barb

The best things you can send and that they always appreciate are things like Capri Suns and juice box drinks favorite chips snacks, laundry soap toothpaste, black socks, toilet paper, towels, cd's batteries, books, paper, letters, deodorant, power bars homemade cookies, favorite candy and gum, even disposable cameras, and they can send it back to you to develop!! "BTRY MT" stands for "Battery Motor Transport." Trucks, trailers, HMMWVs (Hummers), etc. My son is in 1/5. He was in Iraq for the war last year. I was there for the war 13 years ago. I have been a Marine for 28 years and all three of my sons are Marines.

I just found this web site and it's good to read all the posts. I feel a connection to strangers I've haven't felt since my Marine's graduation ceremony Dec 7th 2001,in San Diego. My son called last night from Ar Ramadi. He felt good and sounded even better. We haven't heard anything for nearly 4 weeks. Morale sounded good but keep cards, letters and care packages coming. Nathan enlisted Sept. 10th 2001. The next day will never be forgotten. A proud Dad and vietnam era vet.

it was really good to read all these comments from everyone. The ones about care packages are very helpful. i went out yesterday and got a bunch of stuff to send off. one thing that i learned from a site called Marinemoms.com was to keep the packages small so that they get there faster. the big ones take longer. almost a whole month. we finally heard from our son last night. His name is Nathan. it had been almost 3 weeks that we had heard from him. it has been hard not to hear from him but now our spirits are lifted up a little bit higher. Take care.

Hello all, My husband is not a marine but if your loved one is in "CJC" they are together.I just wanted all of you to know that are new to this "deployment" you can get free boxes, bubble wrap, tape etc from the Post Office. Next time you go in just ask and I'm sure they will be happy to oblige if not visit USPS.com and they will ship the supplies right to your door.I am putting prayers out for all of our troops..especially today if you have seen the news we are all scared about todays events but just keep up the prayers it has worked for me for 7 months so far!

Shannon, I feel your pain, trust me, I'm in the same damn boat, I'm engaged to my marine, who is over there, and I know that he is the love of my life, as I am his, and it sucks. Just hang in there, you aren't alone in this. Write letters, cards, and send stuff, it really does help to hear from home, take it from me, I'm in the military myself too, with the looks of things, I may go when he gets back....pray that doesn't happen, I want at least one night with him before I go. Hi, My boyfriend is in 1-34. I was looking for some information on the net when I found some comments from this website on ar-ramadi. I am not in an environmnet where anybody goes through the same things and trials. True everyone is nice and feels sorry for you and they come up once a while with a concerned look and ask you if everything is ok, especially after some clips on TV. So it made me feel a bit better to see that I'm not alone and that there are other women (mothers, wives, fiancees, girlfriends, daughters or sisters) who know what it is like. Most of the time you don't want to watch the news and pretend that everything's normal and life goes on as ever, but when there is no news, even if you do think it's good news, you start feeling worried. Does anyone have any news from ar-ramadi?

My son is also in the Marines; this is his second deployment to Iraq. He was able to get leave for 2 weeks - came home & surprised me at 2:00 a.m. Nine (yes 9!) hours later he got a call from Camp Pendleton to get back ASAP. I put him on a plane at 2:45 and he left the next day. Received 2 e-mails from him; info about the same he says everythins is O.K. but at night or when I'm alone the tears don't stop. He is in Ar Ramadi & said that they have phones but they only use a credit card or an ATM card. Since he left so suddenly he was unable to find the ATM card. Can anyone tell me if they have received calls from their Marine. Any info would be very helpful. God Bless our Troops!

Hi - I received a call from my son 10:45pm cst - March 12, 2004. He sounded good. His camp and one near by both have some phones. But they can call collect - or use AT&T phone cards - you can buy them at Wal-Mart and Sam's (Sam's are cheaper). I sent one in a letter because they get to him faster. The 1st package took 20 days. He was glad to get the snacks and kleenex and toilet paper. God bless you and all of our soldiers and families.

My brother has been in Iraq since April/04 and has spent most of his time at Ar Ramadi. He hasn't called much but since my aunt sent him a calling card whenever he does call the conversations are sometimes up to an hour. When his time on the card does run out my mom is able to put more money on it over the phone.

I came across your story as I have been searching for news about my fiance' who is also in Ar- Ramadi. I was lucky enough to recieve a phone call from him on Sunday,Nov. 14. He was given 5 minutes to talk from a satalite phone, yet he did not give me any details on when he would be able to contact me again. Hope this little bit of info. helps!

The info that we have stated is common info. It is on the news. Dan Rather has used the name of the division's over there. If that was unsafe, I would never do anything to harm any of them. Yes. A whole division in Ramadi is OK to say... Something along the lines of My hubby PFC JOhn Doe is moving from Kuwait to Ramadi on 10-12-04 is not ok.... Or about missions or names or anything like that. Saying 1st Marine Div is there is Ok...There is a difference. When you are the enemy and you are looking for bits and pieces of information you pick up the smallest ones and you can use them and piece it all together.That is what we are all talking about. That is what OSPEC is all about...

Thanks that is a huge load off. Like I have said this is my first time dealing with this and I thought this site was great until I thought I screwed up big time!! my husband is in 4/3 ADA..and i know how stressfull this all is but i don't think that we will know when they come home. They change plans all the time and the guys down there get very frustrated over that. However i'm very confident they they will be home by August so just hang in there and pray for now...that's all we can do

Hi, My daughter is also at junction city but she is not in the service. She is a volunteer working at the base exchange - yes there is an exchange - if you go to the web site aafes and then click on the upper right corner - called down range you will go to the aafes volunteer page on the upper left is a box -click on the arrow and scroll down until you see junction city at least you can see what type of amenities are available to your husband. my daughter is trying to retunr to junction city this week and she just told me she has to convoy I pray to God she will be okay

Ar Ramadi is not as dangerous as Baghdad but my boyfriend told me there was a boom 2 weeks ago and he saw his friend dead. I was so sad and helpless. Just pray to god every day. I'm at Camp Ramadi also. We have a AT&T phone center that takes phone cards, which he can buy at the PX here. If he's sating credit cards or ATM. He's not on this base.

My brother has been in Iraq for almost a month now. Several members of my family haveheard from him and he says that everything is okay. One thing that our troops will need while they're over there isflea collars and/or powder when it gets hot. The sand fleas are terrible and I'm sure your boys would appreciate it.

My son is a soldier in Iraq. They are not allowed to wear the flea collars as some soldiers were getting sick from them. Anti itch cream would probably be welcomed!

Both flea collars and flea powder are TOXIC and can cause mild to severe alergic reactions in humans. With the warm weather on it way send bug repellent, 100% deet preferable such as Cutters.

My son has been in Ramadi and Fallujah for 6 months now, he's with the 1-5 FA out of Fort Riley. This past week has been tough on all of us family members with the unrest in that area and seeing what the enemy is capable of now. As worried as I am, I find hope in thinking about how close our sons and husbands have become to each other as they face each new day over there, and how nobody's going to do more to protect and help them right now at any given moment than their "new family" members. They're making friendships and bonds that will last for the rest of their lives long after they come home. My son's good friends over there probably know him better than I do right now, as I'm sure they can open up with each other like they never have before in their young lives. They're growing up like they never have before. I hope we all keep our spouse/children/friend/parent's spirits up the best we can so they can, in turn, be positive and supportive to each other. Very important. Just talk about happy things and not the news or how worried you are when you write or talk, something I'm just now learning. Very hard to do. I love my son and I am so proud of him and everything he's doing - proud of all our fighting forces, we're thinking of you here at home every minute of every day!!! If any soldiers read these posts and you happen to know him, please tell my son, Jason from Ohio, that mom sends her love and positive wishes...(and mention an email/phone call would be a good idea lol)

I just heard about and saw the news about the attack in the city of Ramadi, Iraq. 12 Marines killed, and 20 Marines injured. There are families out there; wives like myself, children to fathers and mothers, parents to children and unborn children they haven't met yet. We all sit at home watching the news, notified of something terrible happening half way around the world; yet we cannot do anything to help our loved ones and we have NO WAY OF KNOWING if it is someone dear to us! Lets just all keep our heads up, show our support for the ones we love that are out there, and BE STRONG. NEVER think negative when something like this happens and we watch and see on T.V. My Army son is at FOB Manhattan in Ramadi... and I know he is working alongside some of your Marines. Believe me I have been clinging to the "No news is good news" theory. Our guys are the best trained and are very good at their jobs, all we can do is keep showing them and everyone else that we fully support them, and can't wait for them to return to us.

Our son's been in Ar Ramadi since Aug. with the 2nd Infantry Div., Bravo 122. He's always positive when we hear from him. We're so proud of the commitment he has made along with his fellow soldiers. Our prayers are with all military families.

I am glad to see that there are many people on here that i can relate to... my fiance left with the 1st Marines in Early Feb too from Pendelton...I am having a really hard time dealing with it... i just feel so stressed out! You are not alone!! My boyfriend left around feb 11th or 12th and I miss him so much. He is from the 1st Mar Div. Just trying to keep busy helps the time also friends are key right now. Thanks aj ... it means alout to have some one who knows what you are going through. I know that my fiance is in Ramadi... but sometimes the soldiers dont have access to phones or computers like others do. I have heard that there are computers there in Ramadi... but my bf says that he does not have access to them...and i also understand that the phone centers get shut down...so if you ever need anyone to talk to just let me know and ill help you through anything. It is hard ...very hard on every one... all we can do is keep on writing our boys and keep their spirits up... and not to mention ...KEEP ON PRAYING! Thanks for yr support! Lets be thankfull for all that we have and let us have faith in God that he'll bring our Marines home and keep them safe. God bless.

I sometimes get discouraged when I hear everyone saying that their loved one calls or e-mails so often. But I know that they all have diff jobs and mine is on the road a lot 18 hrs at a time. I know he loves me and would contact me more often if possible. It is still tough! I just pray everyday for them all and write him as much as I can. Here if you need anything. You and your man are in my thoughts and prayers, along with everyone! :)

Hey keep yr head up. I can't imagine how tuff it must be on yr bf...and on you! I know he does love you and he misses you very much. He must be extremely busy ...with being on the road all the time. Just don't give up on him or your self... stay strong...and I know how tuff it is because I have bin in yr shoes... I've bin at the point where i thought I was going to break. But keep on going... he wants you to...and if anything I can guarintee that he loves you and misses you and thinks about you just as much as you do for him. My son left from Kuwait on Wednesday 3/3 and arrived in Ar Ramadi on 3/7. He called on Monday 3/8 and said they were going out on patrol and to pray for him. He was scared. We haven't heard from him since. I'm freaking out.

Hi CPL Hicks, Hope all is well with ya. Not a lot going on here. We had a couple of days of rain and may git some light stuff again this afternoon. Sharon went over to see your MOM the other night, she wasn't there, Lizzy let her in, your DAD was in bed, so she sat down in the lving room, Lizzy left the room, Sharon sat there for about 10 minutes then came home. She thought your MOM would be back soon. I told her that it was a good thing Larry doesn't sleep in the nude and got thirsty or two ppeople would have been embarassed. I have had no commun in sev days myself. My son is in Junction City w/ 1-5. I do know they take communications down when things are active, and they have been active. RE: Packages, plan about 2 wks after it reaches APO, so figure how long to Calif and add 2 wks. My son's third time in area and I worry every day. Have sent several requests for communication with no answer for several days, so assume just have them down. Actually, think they can call pretty easy if go to commun center. New system, cheap too. I am hearing impaired part deaf and my age 39 years old I have three sons, divorce. I live with my dad house for 3 half years. I am diffcult my life with sons and bug me ex-husband. my problem with sons, quit school, trouble anywhere, argue me, money and vacation. I have a close friend in Echo 2/4. I spoke to his mother two days ago. She received a call from him via satellite phone Monday early morning from Iraq (less than five minutes). He said it was difficult getting in, (came under mortar attack), but few injuries and they were now in a considerably "safer" area. Flea collars won't help- they are toxic to human beings. Soldiers can help themselves in 3 ways. First, when the weather permits, troops should cover as much of their skin as possible with their uniform. Clothing is a strong mechanical barrier that keeps the bugs away from the skin. Second, the uniform or other outer clothing should be pretreated with the repellant called permethrin. A single, good uniform treatment will last for months, even with laundering. The purpose is to keep the sand flies from even landing on the uniform, from where they could move to exposed skin. http://www.ampro.co.nz/products/tendercorp/tendercorp.htm Third, troops should apply DEET repellant to their exposed skin. Military supplies of DEET lotion are stronger and last longer on the skin than commercial, over-the-counter products. Military DEET is a free supply item and doesn't have to be applied as often as commercial products, most of which contain the same active ingredient - DEET - but, just less of it.

Hey Amber, My fiance is also with heavy weapons 2-4 marines stationed in Ar Ramadi...I last spoke to him Sunday the 20th...but with the recent news of the soldiers being killed is very scary for any one to hear...especally if their loved one is in that location. I hope to hear from him soon. It makes me so upset to know that our soldiers are being hurt...my heart goes out to all of the family members who have lost a loved one in the war. They are true heros and i owe my freedom and life to them...and I am very thankful for what they do every day. Just having someone you deeply care about being put in a scary atmosphere is heart breaking and makes you relize the importance of life. Thank goodness for the support we get from family and other people who are going through this tough time in their lives...sometimes I think that you are only as strong as the support you have. So I want to personally say thank you to all of our military and all of yall who help us make it through the bumps in life. I have a nephew currently in Ramadi. He was in the vehicle that got fire bombed and the video aired on Hannity and Colmes on Foxnews. That was a GREAT interview by Oliver North and he actually called all of the 2/4 Heroes. I managed to catch the video. My boyfriend is a Marine and this is his second tour in Iraq. He is in the 1st Mar Div Trk Co. 2nd platoon. I miss him a little more everyday and the worrying never gets easier. Is there anyway to make it a little easier. I have only recieved letters with very little info on what is going on, assuming he does not want me to worry more. This is my boyfriends second time going over there too. Yeah i feel the same way as you and i know that it is hard. But all we can do is pray for them that they all come home saftly and soon. I have found that the more that i keep busy with work, friends family the less i am so worried about him. I try not to watch the news or read the news paper but i catch myself doing it sometimes when I see something really awfull. Then i get tempted to call the hotline # to see if he is ok. But you have to remember that not every picture that we see or story that we hear does not always envolve our men, but we immediatly associate it with them because we are so worried.But in reality they are probably just fine, its just us missin them. I'm sure that if somthign were to happen you would be one of the first persons to know. Thats how i look at it. But so far so good. Nothing dramatic has happend to my man. He is still out there fight strong along with yours. They have got each others back girl dont worry. We will both be there the day that they get off that plane when they return. I know im not alone here, but i really need to just talk about him or ill go nuts! He's left me 3 times now and you would think i was used to it, but it keeps getting harder and harder to let him go. I pretend that it doesnt bother me at all and now for the past two days after he left ive been nothing but a huge B**** to everyone and the minute i hit an area of the room that no one is in im bawling my eyes out... really pathetic prolly... Our grandson is also at Sadam's palace in Ar Ramadi. We talked to him Weds. 17th. He said they are very busy, going out on patrol and not getting alot of sleep. He sounded real good, very up. He said it was a lot better than he thought it would be. They have air conditioning in their tents and a gym. He was in a fire fight the 2nd day he was there. I had hoped that when I found this site I would find some kind of outlet for the dialogue going on in my mind.I posted a couple trial messages a few days ago but there was no response at all.I guess i dont know what I expected but was hoping for something more than just nothing.I wonder if there is something I am missing and failing to do.Is there any one out there.

I am afraid I might say wrong stuff,I wish to share info and learn things but I dont know what is ok to say so I will say this.My son is a marine.He is from camp Pedleton.He always wanted to be a marine.Always.Now he is one,he is doing whatever it is that marines do.He does what he is told and he does it well.He is glad to do it,for God and for country.Whatever happens,he has been fulfilling his goal and he does this for what he beleives is the right thing to do.

There are some who think it is wrong to be there.I am not one of those.We needed to go in there and have a look see around,make sure that there were no weapons of mass destruction,and to satisfy ourself of that.

We needed to stop the evil works of a Saddam and his bad guys.If we can we need to thin out those kind of bad guys before we come home and leave things in a better way than when we found them.I hope we can do that.We needed to try.If no one would help we needed to do it anyway.I am glad that we are doing that and I feel very sorry for those who have lost their life.My son may be next and that wont change what is right and what is wrong.Right and wrong goes on regardless of who lives and who dies.

Every day of freedom and peace we have ever enjoyed here at home has always been bought and paid for by blood.I am glad we have always been willing to pay that price as a country,I hope we always will.God bless all the men and women who are willing to pay.And all the families who raised them up.I cant think of a more honorable way of life.And I cant think of a more awesome country than ours,we fight not to take away anyones land but to set the captives free and in self defense.We are the good guys and in the overall scheme of things,the forces of good and evil are working here.Good is on our side and the good guys always win in the long run.Dont they?

son is in junction city.He calls once in awhile. They have motor rounds just like anyother war. He says everything is finebut just pray far all the men. that's what they need. They can't tell you too much because of security reasons, calls are bring monitered.

My husband called today. He has called a couple of times in the last few weeks. We starting geting mail like two weeks after he left. My husband just recently went over there so there hasn't been a long gap in communication. He said all is well and it is basically just boring. They are always busy with one thing or another though. I'm just going to keep praying that it stays ok.

My boyfriend is stationed in Ramadi. He has been there six months with six to go. I haven't heard from him in a while, but I keep sending letters. After having a bunch of medical tests, I just found out that I am sick. I am not sure whether or not I should tell him now because I don't want him to worry. Yet, I know it probably would not be right to keep it from him. I would appreciate anyone's opinion on how to handle this. Our soldiers work so hard and sacrifice so much and I know how heavy their concerns are anyway. God Bless them all!

I unfortunately don't know where he is or who he's with. All I know is that he is a Sgt. in the Air Force from Tampa, FL. He's been gone since November 2003 and I know he likes the Dallas Cowboys. He became a good friend, I'm a hairdresser and he would come in every two weeks and just shoot at the breeze and we'd laugh and it was so nice to see him. I am a former woman Marine back when nothing was going on in the world, '92-'96. As a result, I got out and am still performing my Marine skills as a truck driver, 48 states with my own company. Just as they said when I got out, "you'll regret it", I do now more than ever. Now I'm being told if I want to go back in, it will take as long as 3-9 months. That not counting job school for doing an MOS change, and waiting for a spot to be open. It gets to me to hear of everything going on over there from either the radio in my cushy big truck, or read about it in Leatherneck. I want to do something! Don't get me wrong, no silly hero stuff, or "I can do everything a man can" nonsence. Right now, about all I can do is write some encouraging letters or something like that, but I am having a time finding anything legit on the internet, since I am nowhere near any military here in Iowa. If any of your loved ones know of any of their fellow Marines that don't receive mail regularly, or their Commanding Officer can distribute a letter or two, I would appreciate sending some to them for encouragement. I would ask they be a single Marine, not to get a date mind you, but just that a single female writing to a married male is not an ethically sound thing to do. Hi everyone, great site. I feel like a real spoiled brat, but I have to share this with you all. I get at minimum four to five phone calls a week, I get e-mails at least four times a week, and two days ago, I got 7 letters dated from March 17 when they shipped from over there. My fiance has gotten at least four letters a day from me, cause this is my life, and I can't do anything but write letters, I've lost my mind...The only problem is care packages, some get them, and some don't. He tells me they don't have someone over there to go through all the packages. I sent one in the beginning of the month of March, and he just got it two or three days ago...sounds pretty busy over there, they always have things to do, he tells me "there are no weekends, I have no idea what day it is here, except when I write in my journal" I hope this helps with anyones questions about mail and such. Its great to hear that your husband and you have a lot of contact. I think its important to keep in touch as often as possible. My boyfriend has only had the chance to call me twice, he's been kept real busy and confesses that he has just been using his spare moments to rest and sleep. Hopefully though they will have internet access in his tent, or whatever he's in right now, in about a week. That will make things easier. I send him a letter or a package each week, they're taking about 15 days I guess to reach them. Well you take care. I need to get back to work.

Hey everyone, I got two phone calls today from my fiance, and last night we "talked" online for, oh....well, we talked...a bit longer than we have been able to in a long time. Here's the thing...It's all in how your individual takes it over there. I heard someone say morale is low, ok, maybe for his/her individual, but each man/woman is different. You all know your person over there, better than they know themselves at times...so you know, just from talking to them on the phone or in their letters what they are feeling. My fiance, is experiencing depression for the first time in his life, and he has no idea how to deal with it. I knew something like this would or might happen, but, I got some great counseling for myself, and my doctor told me, keep is business as usuall, tell them about your day, positive things in your day...don't dwell on telling them what you saw on CNN, because they are living it, and DO NOT tell them how you are worried, and try not to cry...makes them feel even worse....that's all I could take from therapy today, but if anything else is said to me, that I think might help, I will sure pass it on you all. I'm with you folks, let's hang in there, WE CAN, AND WE WILL DO THIS!!!! SEMPER FI!!!

My husband has been over there quite sometime. Seen alot. He told me that when I do CRY it makes him feel good. That is how he knows I love and miss him. I tell him all the time how I worry. It does not make things worse for him. It's a given that we will worry they know we worry and I can not help but to cry sometimes when I talk to him. Especially when I know he went through something terrible.

I think the way people deal with war is much like the way we deal with grief. Everyone has their unique way of handling the pressure, the time away from home, and what they witness. Much of what we say and do is dictated by the level of intimacy we have with each other. My best advice is to treat and talk to your Marine the same way you would if they were home with you. If you have always openly discussed your feelings, then continue to do so now. I think our guys worry more when they feel that "something just isn't right" with the way we behave toward them. Keep it as natural as possible. Semper fi, Not just a vet, mom to a Marine too!

HEY this is an awesome web sight... i wish i woulda known about it sooner. My fiance is stationed in Ramadi right now and Im having a really hard time with it. I am scared outa my mind! I do get phone calls from him almost every day...unless the centers are shut down... so i get worried when i dont get one for a few days. Does anyone else have a problem with the phone cards? I buy him 500 minute phone cards for $25 and he ends up only getting 25 minutes outa them. If any one knows of a better or more economical way of phone usage i would love to know. Hi My boyfriend has given me his phone card number and pin number, so he can recharge it and so can i. I have found the cheapest way to go about it is buy one from walmart or sam's club. They recharge for cheap and both of you can do it, depending on who has the most pocket change at the time. Hope this helps you.

My son is a marine stationed by the Syrian Border. He said he had to have a Segovia card so I found that and got him one now they need to change to this IPcalling card and I can't find out how to get to them to buy one. I have the site www.ipcalling.openband.net but the page will not come up. Someone please tell me how to get a phone card to my son.

when you go to the website you have to take the www off and its just ipcalling.openband.net and it should the website right up. It looks like you have to set an account up and then they send you a pin number.
