Apatin family descendants are fortunate to have the genealogies of their families already done for them for the period from 1895 to 1945, with some sources taking family relationships to roughly 1770. One book is "Familienregister Apatin/Abthausen" compiled by Josef Paul Schwend from Diocese of Kalocksa records and I believe civil records also. The approx 900-page book crosslists marriages by father's surname across the network of interrelated Apatin families, giving children's names if known, and was published in Frankfurt/M by Straubing in 1986. I caution against large numbers of people making multiple photocopies of this book. I suggest searching for a copy on the open market of internet used-bookstores or traveling to the book at a library where it is cataloged and taking one copy of the relevant pages to be reproduced for others. Schwend gives the info required to pinpoint which microfilms to call for from Salt Lake City for viewing at lds research centers. If you get to Stuttgart, you can ask to view their copy at the Institut fur Auslandbeziehungen in Charlottenplatz. It was there in Sept 1998 that I felt a strong connection to my Apatin grandparents (Joseph Ludwig and Anna Seifried), when I casually examined the book, not knowing what to expect, and found their names. Hi, can you help me here. I am inexperienced with this. I am looking for information on Franz Schweitzer that was shipped to US from Germany or Switzerland? Who was his wife? And where he born and who were his parents and beyond that? Any information would be welcome. THanks! Renee
Anna Seifreid was Eva Seifreid's sister. Eva married Frank Ballingash (Franz Palinkasch) and they are my great grand parents. I have a photo taken in Apatin about 1926 when Eva and Anna visited their parents, sister Rosina and brother John.
I regret I got into the subject of span of years covered by Schwend and others. I have stated dates incorrectly above, but the subject is too involved to be gone into here.

Hi, I am trying to get information on my grandmother's family. They came from Apatin, Hungary to Philadelphia, PA via Ellis Island. They arrived in Ellis Island on February 10, 1906. My great grandparents are Jozef and Magdolna Schwalm. My grandmother is Rozina Schwalm. She was 8 when she came to the US. Her parents were 30 and 28. They Americanized their names. Jozef became Joseph and Rozina became Rose. I am not sure of the exact spelling that Magdolna used after coming to America. She passed away before I was born.
My grandmother was an only child. I do know that Jozef had a brother Tobias who came to America a couple of years later with his wife and baby boy. I never heard of Tobias when I was growing up. My great grandfather died in April 1955 approximately 2 weeks before his 80th birthday. My grandmother lived to be 91. She died in 1989.
Can tell me how to research their ancestory? I would certainly appreciate any help. Their surname is SCHWALM.
Thank you.

Dear Friend,
I am looking for genealogy information for my grandparents Janos (John) Reitenbach and Anna Graf. I have reason to believe that my grandmother and her family were from Apatin, Hungary.
I am looking for specific records of birth, marriage & death certificates, church records, etc., that can be substanciated.
John Reitenbach (Janos)
Born: 1882-1883 (exact date unknown).
Janos met Anna in a village near Apatin while she was cleaning his parents home.
1907 ship manifest lists his given name spelled "Janos".
Return trip ship manifest lists his given name as Johann.
Anna Graf - Daughter of Josef Graf & Anna Blasevitsch.
Born: December 28, 1886 in Apatin Hungary.
1912 ship manifest Anna lists Josef Graf (father) as her next of kin.
Descendants of John Reitenbach & Anna Graf:
John, Ann, Peter, Joseph, Frank, Theresa (Grace), Paul, & Katherine.
Married in Austro-Hungary (exact date unknown).
John and Anna came to the United States on June 12th, 1907 on the ship LaProvence.
They lived in St. Louis, MO from 1907-1911, they moved to Akron, Ohio in 1912. John and family may have lived in Wisconsin for a brief time before moving to Akron.
Anna returned to Apatin in 1911 with her oldest son John. There she gave birth to her daughter Ann while visiting relatives. Ship records indicate that daughter Ann was 10 months old when they returned to the United States in 1912.
Another family member mentioned that my grandmother met my grandfather (Janos Reitenbach), while cleaning homes in a village just outside of Apatin.
If you are a relative, or can help me find relatives in Apatin or the surrounding area, please contact me. I am trying to verify my Donauschwaben ancestry.

Hi, I've recently looked up the manifest for Ellis Island for my great, great grandmother whom traveled from Apatin in 1913 at the age of 37 with three children. Her husband had come over to the USA several years earlier. I believe my father said he was an interpreter for people/fishermen traveling on the Danube. Their names were Terez and Stefan Engel. Would you happen to know anything about my family?
Hello My Apatin Friend,
My husband's ancestors came from Apatin. I am interested in finding out more about your city. I believe you are on the Danube river. It must be beautiful. We live in Michigan where we are surrouned by many lakes. We have snow on the ground today. We are getting ready for Christmas. How are you?
I live in Beaver Dam, WI
My father came to the US in 1909 at the age of 2. His family settled in Mayville, WI.
We have never been able to trace our family back to Apatin.
hallo mister utrie,
i might help you to reconstruct your utri-family til the middst of the 18. century, when the family utri moved from the village GOLDSCHEUER (on the river rhine at the opposite side of french straßburg, nowadays a goldscher is a part of a city called kehl)
by my great grandmother i am a descendent of Utri, i would like to help you (surely for free)
greetings from germany

I think my grandfather stayed with a cousin or something when he came over... I wonder if that would be your family?
Huszli was how the last name was spelled at Ellis Island.
Bill,
I could be related to you in some way if your family came from Apatin. I have been told that my Grandfather was given the surname Utri, which was his mother's surname. Our family's name apparently should be Hussli since that was the last name of my greatgrandfather.
hallo,
since 2000 the cases of bith and death of german settlers in koluth are published in a book,
my fathers family (pfeifenroth) originally setlled in koluth and moved to apatin 1848.
because i research my familytree since 20 years, i bought this book, if you are interested, i can try to reconstruct your familytree(surely for free!)
greetings
herbert pfeifenroth from germany
I think the story on mine (& Larry's) grandparents was there was a cousin who came over earlier than my grandfather... I'm not sure what year or what his name was....
Our last name was spelled Huszli on the Ellis Island records.
hallo,
the first person named Rank was KOnrad Rank who died 20.5.2908 age 86 in apatin he was born in the village Koluth and married in apatin Rosina Klein.

I know that my GF had a brother, George, who was supposed to have been in the Navy and died at age 26. I was, also, told that he was a policeman in Apatin. I have pictures of him with the family taken prior to 1900. I am assuming that he died in WWI.

Quite a few of my mother's family came from Apatin. Some worked on the Prairie Farm in St. Charles, then moved to Saginaw. Some settled in Pinconning, then on to Saginaw. My mom and I visited Germany,Austria and some of Hungary, but didn't get as far as Apatin. Areas on the rivers are beautiful.
Our family names: Gerhardt, Gerschbacher, Ballingash or Palinkas, Geiser, Hussle and Seifreid. Dates vary from 1901 to abt. 1908.
Recently a distant cousin updated me on the family tree and way back in the middle 1800's there were Geiser's in our family in Apatin.

hallo,
your familyname is writen in several diferent ways, so ballingasch, or palinkasch. the reason is simpel: your familyname is hungarian and must be prononced palinkasch (sch= sh in english), but in this multiethnic area the familynames were written in many ways.
the first palinkas in apatin was Martin palinkas who settled in 1769

The first Brucker in Apatin was :JOHANN BRUCKER who died 19.11.1811 in the age of 80 years. he was married to a wife Barbara, her maiden name in unknown (that`s rether common in the 18. century!) who died 30.7.1777 in the age of 67 years.
this couple are the forefathers of all Bruckers in Apatin, I am sorry but there is no dokument, that proves where this couple originally came from in Germany

I would love to know who helped you in Apatin research. I have been stuck for years. My Grandfather, Adam Schweitzer, was born in Apatin in 1882. He had a brother Franz, & George, and a sister Katherine. The only other info we have on his family is that his mother's name was Teresa. Don't know his dad's first name as he always said "Pa". Only one Aunt left and she can't help as she only knows the dad as Pa.

Beth,
Do you have an email address? I can send you some info on the Palinkas/Ballingash family if you would like. Do you have any more information on Rosina and Katherine Siler or is it spelled Seiler? I would be interested in finding out more about their parents, and other siblings.
I have recently talked to Ginny LaBelle (about Palinkas) and sent her all the info I had to see if she can add to it.
My email is: Ttiano245262MI@comcast.net
Thanks, Judy Tiano

I recently came across an insurance policy that my Grandfather had. His place of birth was given as "Apatin"; he was born in 1889. I stumbled across this site doing a bit of research. I live in Green a short distance from Krumroy Road.
Can you provide any historic details? I know that Apatin is located in present day Yugoslavia. In what country was it in 1889?
hallo steve,
i would like to add something: apatin was before 1750 a military camp, because inthis egion there were wars against the osmanian invasion in hungaria (1532), after the "peace of karlovac" between hungaria and turkey, apatin was colonised with germans and other folks. it was a part of hungaria till 1919, and then was forced by the winners of world war I to be given to the new founded state of jugoslavia

Hi There,
I read your response to my Apatin message. Both of us seem to have grandparents from Apatin in the 1880's. I have lots of info about Apatin & the Danube Swabians as they were called. You can contact me at home 330-798-4236

Steve -- actually Yugoslavia is no more.
Apatin is in Serbia since the disintegration of Yugoslavia in 1990's.
Apatin was in Hungary, the county (megye) of
Bacs Bodrog ... AND Hungary was a part of the
Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1889.
Check out www.dvhh.org for the history of this area and the poeples who lived there.

If you get this befor I go, I'd appreciate any info you may have to help me.

Eva -- you have an advantage in your own background in Apatin. We have had to try
to find someone to take us to Apatin from
Budapest and are only hoping it will work out. This is 3rd time we've tried to make it
there only to have plans cancelled first 2 times.
I have tried to get map and history of city
with no luck yet.
Hope your visit is a great one!

We visited Apatin this May and we enjoyed it. We took a train from Budapest to Sobotica and were picked up by Ilija who lives in Apatin and taken to Apatin by car. The train trip was nice too.
If you want further info let me know fgoering@charter.net
Dear B. Martin
Thank you for your reply. We are planning to take a bus out of Karlsruhe. The bus will travel through Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, Budapest and then Apatin. Would this be something that might work for you? We will be in Apatin for about 7 days. I believe there is another but tour out of Germany later in August for the Apatiner, Kirchfest. This is a two-week trip in Apatin.
Dear Eva -- thank you for your reply. We will be staying in Budapest (and Vienna) and have been e-mailing a man in Budapest who says he will take us to Apatin.
But I feel I need to have a back-up plan. We
are reluctant to go ourselves for neither of us speaks Serb, Hungarian or German. My husband speaks French and a little Italian
and I can get "angry" in German, but that's it. Someone in Budapest advised us not to
attempt it on our own. (?)
I want very much to see Apatin, even if very
briefly. My family goes back to 1730's there.
My thanks

Dear B. Martin -- I am not sure if you are comfortable leaving an e-mail address on this site. I would be able to send you more information that way. Our trip will begin on July 17th -- returning July 26th. If you are planning on being in the Vienna/Budapest area during that time, I will be more than happy to get you more information. Please let me know.
Hi, I am a member of the Apatiner Verein in Milwaukee Wisconsin. Many of our members arrived in Milwaukee in the early 1950s. We uphold many of the traditions and customs of our Apatiner/Sentiwan/Donschwaben heritage. My grandmother is Magdalena Tielser(geboren Mack) My Grandfather was Michael Tiesler. I am proud to say that we even have several recreated traditional sentiwan trachts in all sizes sewn by my grandmother that we periodically display at various donauschwaben festivals. I will share this site with others in our organization.
